[News Anchor-Elaine] Olivia Zhang joins us now. She is the artistic director at the US Wushu Chinese Wushu Institute. Thank you so much for joining us.
[Guest-Olivia] Thank you for having me. Elaine.
[News Anchor-Elaine] Olivia. What is the draw to Wushu? And what do you think has led to the increased interest in this sport over the years.
[Guest-Olivia] Well, Wushu stands as an integral, and a unique expression of the traditional Chinese culture, intricately integrated with, you know, classical philosophy, political ethics, military thoughts, culture, arts, and then also medical theories, social customs, and more. And these elements interact and mutually shapes each other collectively, forming the vibrant and diverse tapestry of the Chinese culture. Therefore, Chinese wushu in this context reveals the culture's fundamental characteristics. And that's one of the things that really draws people to Wushu.
[News Anchor-Elaine] Yeah, I think we just heard a hundred 1 million people worldwide practicing. Some have called this a lifestyle. Why is that? Is it some of what you just mentioned?
[Guest-Olivia] Yes, definitely. And the Chinese martial arts movement is like akin to the brushstroke on the canvas of history, silently mirrors the tales of the ancient struggles, triumph, and the profound wisdom. So the balance, the harmony, and the principle of Yin and Yang in Wushu compels practitioners to refine to their mental focus, exercise their self-control, and foster inner balance.
[News Anchor-Elaine] You also coach and teach Wushu. What kind of students are you seeing? Is this a sport where young kids can get involved? What age is the optimal age to to begin?
[Guest-Olivia] I think any age is optimal. The younger the better if you want to practice the more contemporary martial arts that's faster. But if you're older adults. There are Tai Chi Chuan that is suitable for elders as well. And we see students nowadays from diverse backgrounds. So it's not just the Chinese Americans here in the States that's learning it, but also other ethnic groups as well.
[News Anchor-Elaine] Now are you surprised by the response? And I know you didn't go to this event there in Texas, but just the representation, the number of countries involved, and how it's evolved over the years.
[Guest-Olivia] Well. It has evolved a lot. And I actually have a special connection to this championship, because this is the second time it held in nearly 30 years, like it mentioned earlier, and the first time was back in 1995, when my father and Anji Zhang was a coach to the China Wushu delegation for the Third World Championship in Baltimore, Maryland. And following the competition, they did a tour across America promoting Wushu. And so fast forward to today. You see a lot more countries participating this competition.
[News Anchor-Elaine] So you've really grown up in this. Do you think Wushu could ever become an Olympic sport one day?
[Guest-Olivia] I think so. And I think it's also the right time to be included very soon. Wushu has already gained a global presence. And so it's a natural step forward to be included in the Olympics.
[News Anchor-Elaine] All right. We hope to see that soon. And of course we'll bring you back, Olivia Zhang. Thank you so much for joining us from Maryland.
[Guest-Olivia] Thanks.
